Teaching Your Dog To Swim

June 25, 2016 By Melanie Monteiro Leave a Comment

Summer is here, and nothing beats the heat like a refreshing dip in the pool with your pup. If your dog has never been swimming before, it’s important to introduce her to the water properly, and keep in mind that some dogs may be ill suited for this activity. This includes young puppies, elderly or overweight dogs, short-nosed, short legged or toy breeds, and dogs with medical conditions. Other dogs simply don’t like the water, and that’s okay — never force a fearful dog to swim. Dogs without tails may have difficulty when learning to swim, since the tail is used as a rudder — but they’ll soon develop their own technique if they’re enthusiastic about the activity. Ready to dive in?  The following tips, which I shared with my friends at Healthy Spot this month, will help guide you.
